This article first appeared on the website of my former beard-care brand, the now-retired Beerded Beard Company. I ran that business for five years, starting in 2014. The brand is gone, but this guide is still one of my favorite explanations of what beard oil is and why it matters. So I dusted it off, polished it up for 2025, and brought it back for your reading pleasure—a gift for my bearded brethren.
Let’s dive in.
The most basic beard care regimen begins with beard oil.
Every great beard starts with a simple routine—and beard oil is the foundation.
Shampoo alone, especially shampoo made for the hair on your noggin, can strip facial hair of essential moisture and natural oils, leaving the skin underneath dry. Beard oil can replace that lost moisture, keep your beard soft, and make daily grooming way easier.
Beard Oil: The Basics

So… what is beard oil, exactly?
In simplest terms, beard oil is a liquid leave-in conditioner formulated for your beard and the skin beneath it. Its job is to keep everything soft, hydrated, itch-free, and looking pin sharp. Want a more official beard oil definition?
Most beard oils are made of three main components:
- Carrier Oils (80–90%)
- Specialty Oils (10–15%)
- Fragrance or Essential Oils (≤1%)
And here’s what each one does.
Carrier Oil
Carrier oils make up the bulk of all beard oil formulas. They’re the workhorses of the mix and the cheapest ingredient. Think of carrier oils as the “broth” in your beard-care soup (yum)—they dilute and deliver the more concentrated (read expensive) ingredients.
Common carrier oils used in beard care include:
- Sweet Almond
- Grapeseed
- Sunflower
- Avocado
- Coconut
- Olive
These oils nourish your beard and help lock in moisture without feeling greasy.
Specialty Oils
Specialty oils are the secret sauce, the pixie dust if you will, that sets one beard oil apart from another. They’re used in much smaller amounts but can offer profound benefits for beard health, growth, and shine.

Typical specialty oils used are:
- Pumpkin Seed
- Apricot Kernel
- Hemp Seed
- Vitamin E
- Rosehip
- Jojoba
- Argan
Some brands lump these together with carrier oils, but they play very different roles—so we’ll keep them separate. I’ve also seen some higher-end beard oils eschew base oils altogether in favor of a more expensive specialty oil base. Lad di da.
Fragrance & Essential Oils
These make up the smallest percentage of the beard oil formula and typically have the most impact on fragrance.
Essential oils come from natural plant sources (think lavender, cedarwood, sandalwood, peppermint, and lemon). On the other hand, fragrance oils are created in a lab, often by a bunch of nerds, and can have such memorable names as:
- Cucumber melon
- Honeysuckle
- Hot cocoa
- Campfire
- Tobacco
Either way, these ingredients are in the beard oil to make your beard smell good. Or at least smell. The good is subjective. Seriously, with what I’ve seen, fragrance names like Amber Romance and Butt Naked (Butt?), what are we to expect?
Who Should Use Beard Oil?
You. If you’ve got facial hair. Just 5-7 drops a day of a quality beard oil massaged into your skin and beard hair should set you right.
And don’t think that because you’re rocking the corporate beard that it’s not for you. It’s ideal for:
- Anyone dealing with skin dryness, itching, or wiry, brittle beard hair
- Short to medium beards (stubble to ~2 inches)
- Beards that demand more shine and softness
If your beard is longer than a couple of inches, beard oil still helps, but you may want to add some beard balm for extra hold and control.
Why Use Beard Oil?
Short answer: because your beard deserves better than dryness, itchiness, and breakage.
Long answer: beard hair is naturally coarser and more prone to damage than the hair on your head, so it needs its own care routine.
